Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date July 26, 2016

“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable–something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Book Review

Despite amazing reviews from fellow readers, I was reluctant to read this book because I am not a sci-fi or fantasy fan. I am so glad I branched out & took a chance because this book was amazing.

This is a thriller, a fantasy novel, a mystery filled with horror & a love story at its core. How does that make sense you may ask? I DON’T KNOW, but somehow Blake Crouch was able to pull it off in this fast-paced, detailed, dreamlike novel.

Jason is brilliant. He loves his family & is taken from them by a masked abductor & awakes to find himself in an alternate reality. He’s in HIS life, but not as he knows it. In this life, he has no wife or child & is a highly accomplished physicist. This is his “path not taken.” The thing is, he desperately wants to return to his old life, but he can’t figure out how to get there. This is where the sci-fi, horror aspect comes to life as he runs through these different versions of his subconscious & different versions of himself. His ultimate goal is to get back to HIS life with his wife Daniela & son Charlie. Sound confusing? It is, but I feel the same way when I’m trying to describe a really elaborate, intricate dream to a friend. It just made sense & this book makes sense if you read it.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good thriller or suspense book. Please, don’t let the sci-fi aspect throw you off, just read it so we can talk about it!
