Saying Goodbye to Girls

Saying Goodbye to Girls

We are Really into Girls.   I thought about writing an introduction to the show, but it doesn’t need one.  It has been groundbreaking and controversial since it started and everything that could be written about has.  After what I thought was a shaky fourth season, Season 5 came out with a bang and I think it was the best yet.  I am both sad and excited to watch tonight.

In honor of the Season 6 premiere, Sarah and I have picked our favorite episodes from each season.

Sarah: Season 1, Episode 1   “Pilot”

Sorry to be so lame, but I really loved the Pilot. Hannah has money troubles, Marnie isn’t happy with her boyfriend, Charlie & I LOVED him! Shoshanna is a total nut, but I wanted to live in her apartment. I still think about that Eiffel tower decal. Possibly my favorite character, Jessa missed her own party! I thought it successfully set the tone for the show & after the first 30 minute episode, I was hooked.

Jessica: Season 1, Episode 7  “Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a The Crackcident”

While this is not one of the most poignant episodes, it is one I can watch again and again.  It is just plain laugh out loud funny, and it made me realize how important Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is to the show. All the Girls encounter different male counterparts, and the phrase “Crack Spirit Guide” is invented.

Sarah: Season 2 Episode 8   “It’s Back”

Old OCD demons come back to haunt Hannah when her parents visit NYC. They drag her to a therapist & it’s heartbreaking to watch her struggle. What’s even worse is that her parents don’t initially address it when its obvious she is spiraling out of control. Also, Jessa is gone, Marnie learns about Charlie’s successful app & Shoshanna is re-thinking her relationship with Ray. This episode gave me a better understanding of Hannah, who I often find incredibly annoying.

Jessica: Season 2, Episode 9   “On All Fours”

The penultimate episode of Season 2 makes me cringe, but Lena Dunham plays Hannah falling apart so well.  This episode shows everyone struggling in different ways as it ramps up to the finale.  Hannah’s heartbreaking meeting with Adam at the end of the episode, when she is so low, is an example of how well this show exhibits the struggles of your twenties. Also, be careful when googling Girls On All Fours….

Sarah & Jessica: Season 3, Episode 7   “Beach House”

We both picked this as one of our favorite episodes-period. As the Girls somewhat drift apart in Season 3, this episode brings them all back together in Marnie’s borrowed beach house. Marnie’s continued need for perfection & control mixed with Hannah’s running around in a turquoise bikini leads to an epic battle where (almost) all the secrets come out. It is also a great Elijah episode & the choreographed dance number is everything!  So many things to love.

Jessica: Season 4, Episode 5   “Sit In”

I was really worried that Season 4 was going to have Hannah in Iowa forever, so I was happy when this episode brought her back.  Girls is great when it depicts how difficult it is to deal with losses and setbacks when you are in your twenties and still very much emotionally immature.  It brings all the Girls over to talk with Hannah, and ultimately reminds us of how close Hannah and Marnie are.  And Mimi Rose.

Sarah: Season 4 Episode 9   “Daddy Issues”

Hannah’s Dad reveals he is gay & despite this, he & Hannah’s mom are planning to stay together. I loved this episode because Hannah is still so immature & this was a really heavy topic & complicated situation for her to navigate. Ray wins the city council seat with Shoshanna’s help & Marnie announces she & Desi are engaged- CRINGE!

Sarah: Season 5, Episode 6   “The Panic in Central Park”

This entire episode centered around Charlie & Marnie. I squealed when I saw him in the jean jacket & beard. The two of them fell right back into a flow & spent the entire day & night getting lost in the City. There are so many memorable scens in this episodes; the canoe, the party, shopping for the dress, etc. It was one of those evenings that you can never plan for, but you seize the moment.

Jessica: Season 5, Episode 7   “Hello Kitty”

I had a difficult time choosing between this episode and The Panic in Central Park, but I had to choose this one because it is so beautifully shot, and it is the heartbreaking episode where Hannah discovers that Adam and Jessa are together.  I love the element of the play and the slice of New York history as well.

Guys, we can’t believe this is it!

I am a Texan living in California with my husband Mark, my best pup Ziggy, and our two cats Marilyn and Goldie. I love reading, cooking, binge-watching great tv shows and staying up too late talking to my friends.
