The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date April 2, 2019

The Prince and the Pauper gets a modern makeover in this adorable, witty, and heartwarming young adult novel set in the Geekerella universe by national bestselling author Ashley Poston.

Imogen Lovelace is an ordinary fangirl on an impossible mission: save her favorite character, Princess Amara, from being killed off from her favorite franchise, Starfield. The problem is, Jessica Stone—the actress who plays Princess Amara—wants nothing more than to leave the intense scrutiny of the fandom behind. If this year’s ExcelsiCon isn’t her last, she’ll consider her career derailed.

When a case of mistaken identity throws look-a-likes Imogen and Jess together, they quickly become enemies. But when the script for the Starfield sequel leaks, and all signs point to Jess, she and Imogen must trade places to find the person responsible. That’s easier said than done when the girls step into each other’s shoes and discover new romantic possibilities, as well as the other side of intense fandom. As these “princesses” race to find the script-leaker, they must rescue themselves from their own expectations, and redefine what it means to live happily ever after.

Book Review: The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston

After the high of reading Geekerella, I have high hopes for The Princess and the Fangirl. I can safely say, I love it!

Princess & The Pauper

Where Geekerella is a retelling of Cinderella, The Princess and the Fangirl is a modern day The Prince (or in this case Princess) & the Pauper. Although she’s starring as Princess Amara in the Starfield films, Jessica Stone is ready for a change. The geekdom that is Starfield is not her bag. She’s ready to move on to something bigger & better.

Enter Imogen. She’s a mega-fan & doesn’t want to say goodbye to Princess Amara. Imogen even started a huge online petition to save the Princess. I mean can you imagine saying goodbye to your favorite female superhero? I’d sign the petition in a heartbeat. I mean, hello? Remember when we tried to Save Imposters? During ExcelsiCon, the Starfield mega-con, Imogen gets mistaken for Jessica Stone. In an instant, she finds herself on a panel with the rest of the stars. Can you imagine?!? I’m geeking out for her!

Can the Princess Save Herself?

While Jessica Stone wants out of the film franchise, Imogen doesn’t waste a second on the panel. Like a badass, she uses this moment to further her cause to Save Princess Amara. During the madness of ExcelsiCon, Jessica misplaces the film’s new script. Even worse, someone starts leaking it online. Much to Jessica’s chagrin, she enlists Imogen to help her out. While Imogen is playing the role of Jessica Stone, Jessica can find out who leaked the script.

As Imogen goes along with the plan, she utilizes this moment to further her cause. She also gets a taste of the limelight and starts to think she may have a taste for Jessica’s best friend/assistant.

Internet Friends & Fanfare

There’s so much I love about The Princess and the Fangirl. We meet Harper & learn about her amazing fan art. She’s Imogen’s internet friend. Who hasn’t made an Internet friend these days? Then there are the non-traditional families. Imogen has two mothers & her brother is a football star who has an amazingly supportive boyfriend.

While I highly encourage you to read Geekerella (because it is SO wonderful) you can read The Princess and the Fangirl as a standalone. Honestly, you’re missing out on some of the fun. Sage, Darien, Cal & Elle all make appearances in The Princess and the Fangirl.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book! Ashley Poston grabs my heart again with her epic tales of love & fanfare. I’m so in love with this story, I’m ready to go write or read some Starfield fan fiction right now. I just can’t let these characters go. I can only hope Ashley Poston continues with the Once Upon a Con series.

Ashley Poston (that’s me!) loves dread pirates, moving castles, and starry night skies.

She graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she really just played a lot of video games and wrote fanfic. Lucky for her, she’s now the author of quite a few books. When not writing, she can usually be found playing Dungeons and Dragons and… still writing fanfic. She lives in South Carolina with her bossy cat, and they are firm believers that we’re all a bunch of weirdos looking at other weirdos, asking for their usernames.
