Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date April 5th, 2016

New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France.

An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences.

For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.

The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents—from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland—as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.

Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly Book Review

Sometimes books hit you & they change the way you look at the world. Lilac Girls is one of those books.

True Stories

Lilac Girls is told from the perspectives of 4 different women. As we meet these 4 very different women, readers learn about different experiences during World War II. These experiences are heartbreaking, beautiful, inspiring & unforgettable. I will never forget the stories of these four women & their families.

Meet Martha Hall Kelly

Amazingly, Lilac Girls is Martha Hall Kelly’s first novel. This fact blows my mind. Martha’s writing is so incredibly fluid & beautiful. She writes in a  way that readers want to relish in every word. Never in my life have I read a 400-page novel that seemed to pass by in a moment. Her next novel, Lost Roses is a prequel to Lilac Girls. Whereas Lilac Girls takes place in World War II, Lost Roses is set during World War I. I cannot wait to read more of Martha’s work.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book! No doubt, this book will remain a must-read for many years to come. If you love sweeping tales of historical fiction, Lilac Girls is a must read for you!
