Luck, Love & Lemon Pie by Amy E. Reichert Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication July 12, 2016

When Milwaukee-area wife and mother MJ Boudreaux notices her husband Chris seems more interested in the casino than her, she’s more bothered that she isn’t upset than by her husband’s absence. She picks up poker as a way for them to spend more time together—and reignite their marital flame.

Although the game doesn’t give her the quality time with Chris that she’d hoped, MJ finds she has a knack for it. Increasingly unhappy at home, she turns to the felt top of the poker table for comfort. Intoxicated with newfound freedom, MJ begins spending more time at the gambling tables and less with her family, finally carving out for herself a place outside her role of wife and mother.

After a string of great wins, MJ finds herself in Vegas, attracting the attention of a certain magnetic poker star. But when she’s forced to choose between her family and her new exciting lifestyle, the stakes may be higher than she thought and MJ will have to play her hand carefully…or risk losing it all.

Luck, Love & Lemon Pie by Amy E. Reichert Book Review

Now, I was Really Into The Coincidence of Coconut Cake, but it was a little harder for me to get Into Luck, Love & Lemon Pie by Amy Reichert. We meet MJ, who is unhappy in her marriage & her husband is Really Into gambling. He even stands her up on a date night because he is at the casino. With two teenage kids that are almost out of the house, she decides to get Into poker to try to rekindle her love.

When she tells Chris, he doesn’t seem too excited. He even tells her to go to the lower betting tables when she goes to the casino with him. MJ is different from me because that would have been my last straw. But, she presses on & is sucked into the poker world & even earns a seat in Vegas where she meets a poker star that’s gunning for her heart. Chris doesn’t come to Vegas & her plan to fall back in love with him by playing poker is failing miserably. She eventually rushes back home at the urging of her teenage son & the relationship hits a boiling point where it’s divorce or starting over.

My issue with the story is I didn’t get enough back story of MJ & Chris to Really root for them. I thought Chris was a total ass & although MJ isn’t perfect, I saw her trying to save her marriage while Chris was distant, critical & making friends with his wife’s college nemesis. He didn’t even go to Las Vegas with his wife, I mean- what the heck?

THE VERDICT

I wasn’t Really Into This book, but it wasn’t a total loss; it definitely had some cute parts. It’s a good beach read or airplane read, but I didn’t enjoy it near as much as Amy’s first book. I am planning on making the Anniversary Pie featured in the book, so I will let you know how it turns out.

Amy’s newest book, The Simplicity of Cider comes out May 16, 2017.
