Nailed It on Netflix

Released March 9, 2018

About Nailed It:

Home bakers with a terrible track record take a crack at re-creating edible masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. It’s part reality contest, part hot mess. The show stars Nicole Byer as host & Jacques Torres as the head judge. Each 30-minute episode features a guest judge as well as two baking challenges.

If you’re not watching Nailed It on Netflix, what are you waiting for? Fresh off Season 15 of Top Chef, I am in desperate need of a new food competition series. Nailed It is just what I need. The show is funny, heartwarming & you’ll learn a thing or two about baking. What’s not to love?

I am Really Into baking, so when any baking show comes out, I give it a chance. Based on the preview, you know several of the challengers don’t actually, “Nail It”.

Initially, I was afraid the judges might be too harsh on the home bakers, but I was wrong. The judges are so encouraging & really to try to help the bakers hone their baking skills.

Nicole & Jacques – A Perfect Pair

Nicole Byer & Jacques Torres are a charismatic duo for sure. They each joke with one another & it’s so fun to see this side of Jacques Torres. For instance, in Episode 2, Jacques shows how to airbrush & airbrushes vodka directly into Nicole’s mouth. The two of them have a great banter that’s enjoyable to watch. They seem to genuinely connect & of course, they have a lot of fun & a lot of laughs.

Jacques Torres is the first Chef I remember seeing on the Food Network. Way back in the day, he was in a little cottage making all sorts of fantastic chocolate goodies. That’s why Nailed It crowns him the French Willy Wonka. Jacques is a baking expert & he’s able to coach the bakers in a way that’s helpful & not condescending. He’s a rare French jewel!

Nailed It – Fun & Games

Nailed It has some really fun elements thrown into the competition. If a competitor hits the button for Freezer Burn, the other bakers have to stop what they are doing for 3 minutes. My dad & daughter brought up a good point that if a baker called for a Freezer Burn at a crucial time, a bake could be completely ruined! Another button is Nicole Nags. If a competitor hits this button, Nicole visits the other stations to annoy the hell out of the competition in an effort to distract them from the task at hand. I cracked up in Episode 1 when she asked Michael to be her boyfriend during the Nag session.

Another thing I loved about Nailed It on Netflix is when Wes shows up. Wes is the stage manager & assistant director who often forgets props. I died laughing when the judges motioned to their right to show the baking kit prize as Wes wheels up a cart behind them on the left. Nicole summons him & he shows up & they have a fun banter. Often, he’s under the table with the winner’s trophy. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m not sure Wes has spoken on the show. Hmmmmm… I gotta check that out. I love that he’s part of the show. It seems his camera appearances were initially unplanned and the show just rolled with it, which makes me appreciate Nailed It! even more. There’s an ongoing web following that is Really Into Wes because of his long hair & brooding good looks. Let’s hope he continues to make appearances as more episodes are released. The more we re-watch the show, Wes is a total dreamboat.

Memorable Contestants

No one understands how important the time element is more than Sal from Episode 3. Poor Sal. He threw chocolate into a bowl & microwaved it for 5 minutes. Of course, this resulted in a smoking microwave & lava rock type chocolate. Jacques urged Nicole to not try it. That’s okay, he’ll get it the second time around. Nope. Sal throws Kit Kat Bars into a bowl hits the microwave again & burns the wafers. You know what though, Sal didn’t give up. None of the bakers give up. They just keep going & do their best. You have to respect that, right?

Amanda from Episode 2. As Nicole said, “Amanda kills me”. Yes, she certainly does. Amanda is a Grandmother from Mississippi & she is a gem. She needs her own spin-off show immediately! When her bakes struggled, instead of making excuses, she made a story. Her pirate doughnut was “psychedelic” & her princess in the castle is so desperate for man the guards are instructed to grab any guy who walks by. She’s hilarious.

Becoming a Better Baker, One Fail at a Time

Nailed It is for bakers at any level. I’ve been baking for over 25 years & I still have bakes that don’t turn out as I plan. Let’s be real, we’ve all had baking & cooking fails. That’s what is so great about this show. We all learn from our mistakes & keep going. Also, a little laughing never hurt anyone. Check out Toni’s great sense of humor about her Princess Cake in the clip below.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into Nailed It on Netflix. On the first day, I watched all 6 episodes. The next day, I got my daughter to watch the show & she loved it. We ran over to my parent’s place & had them watch Episode 2 & 3 & now they are hooked. Day 3 & we are rewatching some of our favorite challenges. Now, I’m just waiting for Netflix to troll me Christmas Prince style.

If you’re looking for another Netflix binge session, check out Imposters! Season 2 starts April 5, 2018, & it’s one of our favorite shows.

If you love Nicole Byer, you can listen to her podcast, Why Won’t You Date Mehere. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I enjoyed her so much on Nailed It! that I’m going to give it a go.

Me too! My Dad was asking me today about The Great American Baking Show. So bummed about it. Nailed It! is so good though! You’ll have to let me know after you watch it. One of my friends in Texas knows someone who was a baker on the show. Her episode hasn’t aired yet, so that makes me excited because I know more episodes are coming!

  • Toni L Smith

Love the show. Where can I get that dress Nicole Byer is wearing on Season 1 Episode 6 in Your Face!

We love that dress too! I tried to do some investigating. I found the costume designer, bus she doesn’t have a Twitter; otherwise, I would ask her directly. Hmmmm, let me see what I can find out. We also loved the pink blazer look from Episode 4 “Weird Science”.
