Smokey Robinson Christmas Everyday Album Review

I love me some Christmas music. Elvis, George Michael, Wham!, Bing Crosby, Otis Redding & the Love Actually soundtrack are my standbys. But you know what? I get a little tired of the same old songs year after year.

It seems like there is a plethora of Christmas themed albums that come out every year. Although they may be popular at the moment, it seems that very few of the newer Christmas albums become staples. Well, leave it to the music legend, Smokey Robinson to change that. His new album, Christmas Everyday is on fire.

My Favorite Tracks – Smokey Robinson Christmas Everyday Album Review

The title track, “Christmas Everyday” features the folk-pop duo, Us the Duo. Now, they have their own Christmas album that’s pretty good too. This track is light, sweet & features the smooth, upbeat vocals we expect when listening to Smokey. I have a challenge for you. Try to listen to this song without smiling or tapping your feet. This song makes me want to throw a vintage themed Christmas cocktail party like yesterday.

While I do love Bruce Springsteen & Elvis Presley’s versions of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, Smokey’s version features one of my favorites, Trombone Shorty. This version definitely has more of a jazz feel, which I love. When Trombone Shorty hits with his solo, it’s just the best. Give me a drink by the fireplace I will chill with this on repeat all night.

“The Night That Baby Was Born” has a Mo-Town gospel feel that is what we know & love about Smokey Robinson. It’s got the familiar soul bass line & I can just imagine The Temptations singing & dancing on this track with Smokey. “The Night That Baby Was Born” will no doubt become a Christmas staple for all.

“You’re My Present” featuring the Dap Kings is a love song. This song, more than maybe any other, is where Smokey’s voice soars with a quiet strength. He doesn’t need to belt out at the top of his lungs for us to appreciate his talent. He sings about his love being his real present. How can you not swoon over that?

One of my favorite Christmas tracks ever is Donny Hathaway’s, “This Christmas”. Smokey does the song justice, which is hard to do in my opinion. Also featured on the album are, “Silent Night”, “Please Come Home for Christmas” & “O Holy Night”. That’s one of the reasons I enjoy this album so much. We’ve got the standbys with some new songs.
