Starbucks Holiday Drinks 2017

The holidays are officially here, and Starbucks is prepared with their lineup of holiday-themed concoctions.  Every year they release their tried and true special Starbucks holiday drinks, and this year they have added a few new flavors.  We imbibed the standbys, taste-tested the new ones and reviewed them all below.  Now we just need to work off our caffeine buzzes and sugar highs!

Toasted White Chocolate Mocha

Our rich espresso, steamed milk and flavors of caramelized white chocolate are topped with whipped cream and candied cranberry sugar. And like the holidays, this drink is here, then gone.

Bailey: The white chocolate mocha latte is my year-round go-to drink, so I was super excited to try the toasted white chocolate mocha. Two words: not impressed. If you don’t like your lattes super sweet then you would thoroughly enjoy it, but I gotta have my sweet flavor. I felt like the toasted flavor took away some of the sweetness that I usually enjoy in my WCM and it honestly didn’t taste much different; it just tasted worse. I enjoyed the latte but I still have to rank it lowest on my list of holiday drinks that I tried.

Starbucks Christmas Blend

Distinctive cedary, spicy layers balanced by a sweet, rich smoothness.

Sarah: It seems that everyone loves the Christmas Blends. My barista raves about the 2017 Christmas edition. I definitely think it’s a but spicier than last year, but I still liked it enough to buy 2 bags.

Chestnut Praline Chai Tea Latte

Your beloved Chai gets a holiday twist with the complementary flavors of caramelized chestnuts and subtle holiday spices.

Jessica: I love Chai Tea, Chai Lattes, Dirty Chai Lattes – so when I saw there was a holiday Chai drink I was excited!  Chai already tastes a little like a holiday drink on its own.  I have to say, I hated this drink.  A lot.  I threw it away after I took a few sips.  It was way too sweet, and I fell like most people that enjoy Chai will feel the same way.  When I told Sarah, she reminded me that I didn’t like the Chestnut Praline Latte last year, so why did I think I would like the Chestnut Praline Chai Tea Latte this year?  Good point, Sarah.  I am forgetful, but my taste buds are consistent.

Caramel Brulée Latte

Espresso, steamed milk and rich Caramel Brûlée Sauce, topped with whipped cream and Caramel Brulee Topping.

Bailey: I love France and creme brûlée, so I absolutely love this latte! I’ve indulged in a real creme brûlée in Paris, torched in front of me and everything, and this latte nails the burnt sugar taste. I’m also a sucker for anything caramel so I love how this drink balances the caramel flavor with the creaminess of the creme brûlée. It’s perfect, and the little caramel crisp topping is a delightful surprise!

Chestnut Praline Latte

Espresso, steamed milk and flavors of caramelized chestnuts and spices. Topped with whipped cream and spiced praline crumbs.

Sarah: If you remember from last year, I totally stalked this drink. I fell in LOVE with it. Now, Jessica doesn’t like it & I just can’t figure out why! It’s super sweet & I love getting a few of the crunch spiced praline crumbs on the top.

Bailey: I love this latte so much, I replay “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” in my head as I drink it. Growing up, one of my favorite things about the holidays was my Mammy’s homemade pralines. The chestnut praline latte captures the praline flavor perfectly along with the roasted, nutty taste. My Mammy no longer makes her pralines so I love drinking this latte to bring back memories!

Peppermint Mocha

A holiday classic made with our signature espresso, steamed milk, sweet mocha sauce and peppermint-flavored syrup. It’s all topped off with whipped cream and dark chocolate curls.

Eggnog Latte

This perennial holiday favorite is made with rich, steamed eggnog and our signature espresso. Then we top it off with a dusting of ground nutmeg for the perfect finish.

Sarah: The older I get, the more I appreciate Eggnog. While this isn’t my first drink of choice, the nutmeg mixed with Eggnog certainly tastes like the Holiday Season. Mix a little amaretto in the mix & we’ve definitely upped the ante.

Holiday Spice Flat White

Ristretto shots of espresso infused with warm holiday spices. Topped with whole milk micro-foam and finished with a “signature dot” or latte art!

Jessica: This drink hit the spot for me!  It was the absolute perfect holiday drink – not too sweet, a little holiday spice – perfect.  I could drink one every day.  This is definitely for the crowd that doesn’t like the overly sweet concoctions, but doesn’t want to miss out on the fun of special drinks.  I may go get one now…

Gingerbread Latte

Sweet and delicately spicy gingerbread flavors mingle with our classic espresso and steamed milk and are topped with whipped cream and ground nutmeg for the perfect holiday touch.

Sarah: The Gingerbread Latte is one of my Starbucks Holiday favorites. It’s got a little bit of that spice I love, but it is not overpowering. Even though it’s still sweet, it’s got a good balance for me. This year, a barista encouraged me to try the milk infused with the Holiday Spice & OMG- SO GOOD! I don’t know why they don’t have the Holiday Spice year round.

Toffee Almondmilk Hot Cocoa

Steamed Almondmilk, mocha sauce and toffee nut syrup are finished with whipped cream and a crunchy Caramel Brulée topping. It’s a one-of-a-kind hot chocolate for the most wonderful time of the year.

Bailey: Yummy, yummy, in my tummy! This cocoa was beyond delicious. If you love the nutty, sweet taste of toffee, or love chocolate, or BOTH, you will love this drink. My local Starbucks was out of almond milk so I had to have mine with coconut milk, but the nutty flavor was still plentiful. You know those World’s Finest Chocolate covered almonds that circulate every baseball season? It was like melting down a handful of these and drinking them. I loved it!

Snickerdoodle Hot Cocoa

A cookie classic meets a cold-weather favorite, made with white chocolate, cinnamon dolce syrup and topped with cinnamon sugar. Get ready for cookie-sipping magic.

Bailey: When I drink this, it feels like Santa and my grandma are giving me a hug at the same time. It’s that warm and good! Starbucks hit the buttery, cinnamon taste on the nose, and then threw in the chocolate for added flare. This is by far the best hot cocoa I have ever had and it will be my new favorite for the holidays! Trying it is a must because you won’t be disappointed.

Peppermint White Hot Chocolate

A sweet twist on holiday hot chocolate. Made with white chocolate mocha sauce, peppermint-flavored syrup and steamed milk topped with sweetened whipped cream and dark chocolate curls.

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

A classic holiday hot chocolate. Made with chocolate mocha sauce, peppermint-flavored syrup and steamed milk topped with sweetened whipped cream and dark chocolate curls.

Jessica: For me, this is the classic Christmas drink that you just can’t go wrong with.  It is also a nice evening treat on a cold night when you just don’t need any more caffeine.  Plus you can share it with the kiddos.
