The Banker’s Wife by Cristina Alger Book Review

The Banker’s Wife by Cristina Alger Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date July 3rd, 2018

On an early morning in November, a couple boards a private plane bound for Geneva, flying into a storm. Soon after, it simply drops off the radar, and its wreckage is later uncovered in the Alps. Among the disappeared is Matthew Lerner, a banking insider at Swiss United, a powerful offshore bank. His young widow, Annabel, is left grappling with the secrets he left behind, including an encrypted laptop and a shady client list. As she begins a desperate search for answers, she determines that Matthew’s death was no accident, and that she is now in the crosshairs of his powerful enemies.

Meanwhile, ambitious society journalist Marina Tourneau has finally landed at the top. Now that she’s engaged to Grant Ellis, she will stop writing about powerful families and finally be a part of one. Her entry into the upper echelons of New York’s social scene is more appealing than any article could ever be, but, after the death of her mentor, she agrees to dig into one more story. While looking into Swiss United, Marina uncovers information that implicates some of the most powerful men in the financial world, including some who are too close to home. The story could also be the answer to Annabel’s heartbreaking search—if Marina chooses to publish it.

The Banker’s Wife by Cristina Alger Book Review

I totally meant to put this review out yesterday. I’ve been waiting (not so patiently) for a chance to read & review The Banker’s Wife by Cristina Alger. I literally squealed when Netgalley & Putnam granted my review request. Yesterday while traveling, (not to Geneva), I thought non-stop about this book!

The Banker’s Wife is Not Your Average Thriller

I am a huge fan of thrillers. I love suspense, tension & slow burns. The Banker’s Wife has all of those things.  To me, it’s what Cristina leaves out that makes this such an enjoyable read. The narrators are reliable & the females are staunch & determined. Cristina also doesn’t sugarcoat the financial world for readers. She gives us gritty & technical details, which enhance the story. She’s not spoon feeding us the top layer of information. She dives deeper & doesn’t dumb it down for readers which I SO appreciate. How she does all of this & STILL makes The Banker’s Wife an enjoyable read is masterful!

A Thriller For All

There is a whole genre of thrillers that are written by men & in my opinion geared towards male readers. That being said, there are a lot of thrillers that are geared towards women. The Banker’s Wife is written by a woman, is marketed as a female author & is geared towards ANYONE & EVERYONE. This is something I want to shout from the rooftops!

Oscar Worthy Storytelling

I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m reading a book I think about what kind of movie it would make. Maybe that’s lame, but books play like movies in my head, so it’s something I always do. For example, take cozy mysteries like Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swenson series. These movies air on Hallmark & it’s the perfect place for these sweet, thoughtful & kid-friendly mysteries. Then there are Lifetime movies. I loved Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell & it’s ripe for a wild, suspenseful Lifetime thriller. You get it, right? The Banker’s Wife would no doubt be an Oscar contender.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book! It’s so damn smart, thrilling & sophisticated. I can barely take it! Read this book!
