The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer Book Review

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer Book Review

When I first encountered Amy Schumer during the Comedy Central roast of Charlie Sheen, I didn’t instantly fall in love. Her jokes made me cringe, made me a little uncomfortable & I’ll say it- I thought she went a little too far.
Years later, I read an Entertainment Weekly interview right before her movie Trainwreck came out & I changed my tune. In this interview, I found out her dad has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She detailed an outing in which he “shit his pants.” Warning: if you can’t handle the phrase “shit his pants” then don’t bother reading this book. She went on to explain her style of humor is rooted in uncomfortable situations & this helped her family cope with his debilitating illness. Then, I fell in love with her.
My mother was diagnosed with MS when I was 8 years old & we’ve had our share of awkward, challenging & at times humiliating episodes in public. When you’re a child & you deal with a parent who cannot control their bowels repeatedly due to a chronic disease progression, you share an instant bond with one another. Our family shares Ms. Schumer’s darker sense of humor & that brand of humor continues to serve us well.

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo was fantastic. As expected, Amy is brutally honest & makes no apologies. I highly recommend the audiobook because she is the narrator. If cursing & sex are a turn off, then by all means skip ahead to the next book on your TBR pile. This book has so much heart. She talks about her struggle with her dad’s illness, her complicated relationship with her mother & her undying love for her siblings. If you’ve watched any of Amy’s shows or stand up specials, then you know she’s not afraid to be vulnerable & that’s what makes this book REAL. I found myself googling which WWE superstar she dated. I now know, but I won’t spoil the surprise. She discusses her role to combat gun violence & her dark and personal experience with sexual & domestic abuse. The reader, much like the TV viewer, knows that she is a true writer. I often found myself driving a bit slower so I could finish a chapter. Overall, I will definitely read/listen to this book again & it made my admiration for Amy’s strength & creativity grow even more. Much like the first time I saw her on TV, it made me cringe a little, made my heart swell, it made me laugh a ton & it made me thankful she was brave enough to tell her story.
