The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: Book Review & HBO Movie

Movie premieres April 22, 2017, on HBO 8 PM

Well, HBO is back at it again and taking a well-loved book and putting it on film.  Fresh off Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies miniseries success, comes Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: Book Review & HBO Movie

For some reason, like right up until writing this, I thought this was a mini-series event, but it’s a standalone movie. It starts one of my favorite actors ever,  Courtney B. Vance as well as Rose Byrne & Renée Elise Goldsberry of Hamilton fame along with none other than Ms. Oprah Chai Tea Latte Winfrey.

Usually I nerd out about book to film adaptations, but I’m taking it easy on this one. I’m honestly just waiting for 8 PM (or I may watch it on the East Coast HBO channel) to see how the movies plays out. There’s so much in this story & I’m grateful to learn more about Henrietta.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book & I am Really Into This movie as well! There was a part in the movie where we saw the Lacks family stand in front of a projected slide of Henrietta’s cells. We see Debra bathing in her mother’s likeness & this moment was so emotional & impactful. I’ve been hearing about this book for years and this TV movie got me into gear to read it.  Now I can see what all the fuss has been about.  Rebecca’s writing style makes a story that centers around loss, medical research and that nasty bitch cancer read like a suspenseful, family drama. She gives a much-needed voice to Henrietta & the Lacks family.

Skloot lives in Chicago, where she is currently working on a new book about humans, animals, science, and ethics, a topic near and dear to her: before becoming a science writer, Skloot spent more than a decade working as a veterinary technician in settings ranging from animal shelters to private practices, veterinary schools and research labs. Those experiences, and the questions they prompted, are at the center of her next book, which you can read more about here and here. Skloot is also an avid knitter, a family traditionpassed on from her mother, Betsy McCarthy, a professional knitter whose story was featured on Your Life Calling With Jane Pauley.
