The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date May 14, 2019

Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Amy, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren Book Review

A wedding buffet has gone awry. The bride’s sister & the groom’s brother will make sure the Honeymoon is not wasted. Too bad they can’t stand one another. Surely, they can fake it for a while, right?

Faking It In Paradise

I do love the enemies to lovers trope, so I’m expecting full on Christina Lauren hilarity mixed with hot back & forth between Olive & Ethan. The usual awesome anecdotes are there. My favorite was when Ethan asks Olive if she can chew quietly & she exclaims It’s humid in this room & I’m congested! Like how can you not love authors who write lines like this?

You’re in paradise with someone you don’t like. So, of course, there is tension. But, I wanted a bit more heat to match the tension. Ethan & Olive meet some other characters at the resort (like her future boss) & I could have done without that aspect. It didn’t add much to the story for me. Also, Ethan & Olive run into some REALLY heavy stuff once they are back from the trip. I totally wasn’t expecting the story to take a deeper turn here, but it definitely added some darker turmoil.

Bring Me the Heat

I would definitely call The Unhoneymooners romance light. And you know what, that is totally okay. While I’ve grown accustomed to really liking the steamy stuff (hello, Jenny Holiday!) that’s not for everyone. The Unhoneymooners is a great go-to if you’re newer to the romance genre.

THE VERDICT
