Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Eleanor knows she’s a mess. But today, she will tackle the little things. She will shower and get dressed. She will have her poetry and yoga lessons after dropping off her son, Timby. She won’t swear. She will initiate sex with her husband, Joe. But before she can put her modest plan into action-life happens. Today, it turns out, is the day Timby has decided to fake sick to weasel his way into his mother’s company. It’s also the day Joe has chosen to tell his office-but not Eleanor-that he’s on vacation. Just when it seems like things can’t go more awry, an encounter with a former colleague produces a graphic memoir whose dramatic tale threatens to reveal a buried family secret.

TODAY WILL BE DIFFERENT is a hilarious, heart-filled story about reinvention, sisterhood, and how sometimes it takes facing up to our former selves to truly begin living.

Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple Book Review

How many times have you woken up and said, “Today Will Be Different”?  I will be better. I will work out & eat healthy & be nice to everyone?  The title of this book got me immediately, & when I realized it was written by the same author who wrote: “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?” I was sold.

The book is set in the same world as her previous, not just in Seattle, but the same elementary school for her son and a similar social world.  The book covers one day in Eleanor Flood’s life; an increasingly overwhelmed wife, mother & former artist.  We constantly look back at her past life to see how she got here, whether it is stories of her childhood & what it was like to help raise her sister after their mother died, or her more glamorous time in New York City as an animator for a hit show she created.  Even though the reader may feel no direct comparison to Eleanor’s life, everyone know how it feels to be completely scatter-brained & overwhelmed at times. You can’t help but feel for Eleanor trying to get through the day.

THE VERDICT

I will read anything Maria Semple writes.  She creates these beautifully funny, intelligent, flawed women who are stuck in a world that is not of their creation – who feel trapped in the day-to-day minutia of being a wife & parent, & who had lives they felt were important before they took on these roles.  Sometimes her writing feels like stream of conscious, & I love it.  This book, like Where’d You Go Bernadette?, was unexpected & unlike anything else being written right now. So much fun!

Maria Semple spent her early years traveling around Europe with her bohemian parents, but that ended abruptly when her father, Lorenzo Semple, Jr., finished a pilot for Batman while living in Torremolinos, Spain. He airmailed it in, they shot it, and the family moved to LA.  After the Batman TV series and feature, Lorenzo went on to write a bunch of movies. Once he was established, the family moved to Aspen, Colorado.

Maria attended boarding school at Choate Rosemary and college at Barnard, where she majored in English.

Maria moved to LA shortly after graduating Barnard and wrote screenplays which never got made, and then TV shows. 90210, Mad About YouArrested Development and others. She quit to give fiction a try.

This One Is Mine was published by Little, Brown in 2008.

In 2008 Maria, George Meyer and their little daughter moved to Seattle just because. It was a difficult adjustment for Maria, which became the basis for Where’d You Go, Bernadette. The novel came out in 2012 and became an instant bestseller. Today Will Be Different is her latest.

I am a Texan living in California with my husband Mark, my best pup Ziggy, and our two cats Marilyn and Goldie. I love reading, cooking, binge-watching great tv shows and staying up too late talking to my friends.
