Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date July 11th, 2017

It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan—a beautiful, charismatic Berkeley mom with an enviable life—went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. No body—only a hiking boot—has ever been found. Billie’s husband and teenage daughter cope with her death the best they can: Jonathan drinks, Olive grows remote.

But then Olive starts having waking dreams—or are they hallucinations?—that her mother is still alive. Jonathan worries about Olive’s emotional stability, until he starts unearthing secrets from Billie’s past that bring into question everything he thought he knew about his wife. Together, Olive and Jonathan embark on a quest for the truth—about Billie, their family, and the stories we tell ourselves about the people we love.

Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown Book Review

I found myself engrossed in this family’s rollercoaster ride. Billie is this magical and mysterious woman I wish I could be.  Sometimes, it would be nice to have that kind of power to walk into a room and command it.

Billie’s daughter, Olive, is still searching to find herself. At the same time, she is searching for her mother. Billie’s husband, Johnathan, continues to have his head & family wrapped up in turmoil following his wife’s disappearance. Janelle Brown’s characters are so relatable, especially Olive’s teenage stubbornness.

Janelle Brown

Janelle Brown is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels All We Ever Wanted Was Everything, This Is Where We Live, and the upcoming Watch Me Disappear. Her journalism and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Vogue, Elle, Wired, Self, The Los Angeles Times, and numerous other publications. Previously, she worked as a senior writer at Salon, and began her career as a staff writer at Wired during the dotcom boom years, working on seminal Web sites like HotWired and Wired News. In the 1990’s, she was also the editor and co-founder of Maxi, an irreverent (and now, long-gone) women’s pop culture Webzine.

A native of San Francisco and graduate of UC Berkeley, she has since defected to Los Angeles, where she lives with her husband Greg, their two children, and a geriatric lab mix named Guster.

I’m originally from North Carolina, now living in the PNW. I’m about to graduate with my DPT, so switching from reading textbooks to my true love of reading for fun. I’m a big fan of the outdoors and love to hike with a book in my pack.
