We Were Mothers by Katie Sise Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date October 1, 2018

A brilliant, twisty novel about a missing woman, an unfaithful husband, and the dark secrets that will destroy two perfect families.

A scandalous revelation is about to devastate a picturesque town where the houses are immaculate and the neighborhoods are tightly knit. Devoted mother Cora O’Connell has found the journal of her friend Laurel’s daughter—a beautiful college student who lives next door—revealing an illicit encounter. Hours later, Laurel makes a shattering discovery of her own: her daughter has vanished without a trace. Over the course of one weekend, the crises of two close families are about to trigger a chain reaction that will expose a far more disturbing web of secrets. Now everything is at stake as they’re forced to confront the lies they have told in order to survive.

We Were Mothers by Katie Sise Book Review

This is a super quick read. I feel like fans of my FAVE, Liane Moriarty will enjoy it.

Low Key Housewives Drama

In all honesty, I had a difficult time connecting with these characters. I found myself unable to really root for anyone. Do you think that affected my ability to get sucked into the drama? Hell to the no!

Just because I don’t like you doesn’t mean I don’t want to know, what you’re up to. I mean, hello, I’m a Real Housewives fan. Drama, secrets & domestic thrillers are my JAM!

A Little Bit of Thrill Goes a Long Way

We Were Mothers has a bit of that thriller element that keeps me turning the pages. No spoilers here, but there are a few unexpected twists. One of which, I LOVED & made the story seem more realistic to me. Sometimes, you can’t make this stuff up, right?

Salt Water Reads November Pick

This is my first book club chat with Salt Water Reads and I will definitely be back again. I love that the author, Katie Sise, was available for an interactive Q&A on Instagram. Talking to an author about his/her inspiration behind certain characters and why the narratives went a certain way is always so enjoyable to me. It’s so great to get an inside look at how the editing process works & how the story changed during the process.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book! All in all a solid book about secrets & relationships with a little bit of a thriller element.  And that is absolutely one of my favorite things in the world.

If you’re into domestic drama, be sure to check out The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen.
