They built a life on lies

Sutton and Ethan Montclair’s idyllic life is not as it appears. The couple seems made for each other, but the truth is ugly. Consumed by professional and personal betrayals and financial woes, the two both love and hate each other. As tensions mount, Sutton disappears, leaving behind a note saying not to look for her.

Ethan finds himself the target of vicious gossip as friends, family and the media speculate on what really happened to Sutton Montclair. As the police investigate, the lies the couple have been spinning for years quickly unravel. Is Ethan a killer? Is he being set up? Did Sutton hate him enough to kill the child she never wanted and then herself? The path to the answers is full of twists that will leave the reader breathless. This book was a crazy wild ride. I read my first J.T book, No One Knows in 2016 & I enjoyed it. There’s something about her writing style that lets me trust where she’s going & that trust took me to some wild places with Lie to Me.

Okay, so we know Sutton leaves her husband Ethan nothing but a note saying, “Don’t come for me.” We quickly learn their marriage has issues & I’m putting that mildly. Ethan & Sutton are a hot mess. They are in love with each other, no doubt, but they have no trust within the marriage. Readers quickly learn their son, Dashiell has died & his death shattered their relationship to the core.

J.T. jumps from the past to present to give readers an idea of how this beautiful, wealthy & well-known couple now find themselves in this crazy situation. Ethan doesn’t want to jump the gun & go to the police in case Sutton is just doing this for attention. But what if something really did happen to her? Their relationship is on such thin ice that none of her friends trust him & they each have their own idea about what is happening between the couple, which complicates matters further.

Lie to Me is a heck of a domestic thriller. No, I did not see the ending. I finished it within 2 days, which to me is the mark of a good suspense novel. Lie to Me kept my attention, it was enthralling & nuts- in a good way! I found myself questioning the narrator because Ethan tells us a lot, but not everything. We are left not being able to fully trust him which adds to the suspense.

J.T. ‘s writing style is so fluid that I could see Sutton at the Starbucks with her baby carriage, I could visualize their home with the stained marble & I had to look up Clairefontaine notebooks. The whole story played like a movie in my head & I didn’t want it to end.

The Verdict

If you’re Really Into thrillers that keep you guessing, then Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison is likely to be up your alley. The domestic suspense aspect is reminiscent of The Silent Wife by Kerry Fisher, which I really enjoyed as well.
