It is no surprise to anyone who keeps up with my reading that I tend to turn away from “heavier” reads. Sad lady fiction is not for me. If the book has too much sadness or deals with topics that are too heavy, I normally don’t enjoy it. Firefly Lane, I’m looking at you!
So when I read the synopsis for Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone I’m thinking that an age gap romance novel about a widower with a young son & a heroine with a past in the foster care system I’m like this – NOPE. Not going to work for me – too sad, too weird & no thank you!
So Hard Not to Judge a Book by the Cover
But here’s the deal. This book is incredible. I listened to the audio, which has a male narrator & it totally worked for me. Get ready for a slow burn, but it heats up at 95% If you’re new to romance lingo, I mean there’s no real sex scenes until the very end.
I’m now on to book two in this series which features the psychic sister, Seraphine. Feels Like Falling is up next! She’s from Louisiana and the narrator nailed her Cajun drawl, but the second narrator, not so much! So I’m probably switching it up to the print version. It’s wild what a difference narrators make on the reading experience.
