Real Female Characters

I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Kay Andrews at a book event in Savannah, Georgia a few years ago. She is one of the most charming people I’ve ever met. There is a radiance that comes from her that you instantly trust & appreciate.

I’m so grateful to be an early reader for Sunset Beach. One thing I love about Mary Kay Andrews is she writes real, raw & believable female heroines. Drue is no different. We hear about her relationship troubles her knee injury, her sweating in the hot & humid air. Readers see her at her absolute worst. I love this because it is so relatable. As much as I love my sweet romances that take place in mansions, it’s very nice to meet someone down on their luck. As a reader, I find it easier to root for these characters. Undoubtedly, it is easier for me to cheer for them.

Murder Mystery

Now, I expect a hilarious summer read with Mary Kay Andrews. Of course, she delivers all of this and more with Sunset Beach. What I didn’t anticipate was the large role the cold case mystery plays in the book. While this element worked well for me, I think it’s good for readers to possibly adjust their expectations. Yes, this is a beach type read with a side of home renovation. But it should be noted, the mystery element is a large chunk of the story.

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book.
