The Weight of Lies by Emily Carpenter Book Review

The lowdown from Goodreads

Publication Date June 6, 2017

Reformed party girl Meg Ashley leads a life of privilege, thanks to a bestselling horror novel her mother wrote decades ago. But Meg knows that the glow of their very public life hides a darker reality of lies, manipulation, and the heartbreak of her own solitary childhood. Desperate to break free of her mother, Meg accepts a proposal to write a scandalous, tell-all memoir.

Digging into the past—and her mother’s cult classic—draws Meg to Bonny Island, Georgia, and an unusual woman said to be the inspiration for the book. At first island life seems idyllic, but as Meg starts to ask tough questions, disturbing revelations come to light…including some about her mother.

Soon Meg’s search leads her to question the facts of a decades-old murder. She’s warned to leave it alone, but as the lies pile up, Meg knows she’s getting close to finding a murderer. When her own life is threatened, Meg realizes the darkness found in her mother’s book is nothing compared to the chilling truth that lurks off the page.

The Weight of Lies by Emily Carpenter Book Review

Holy moly, this book! My buddy Gare recommended I read The Weight of Lies. It’s been in my Audible library since last year. I finally gave it a go & wow!

Let’s Head to Bonny Island

Emily Carpenter tells the tale of a VERY strained mother-daughter relationship. I’m always up for reading about family drama and The Weight of Lies has tons of it! Meg plans to write a tell-all book that will likely out her mother for the controlling, manipulative woman Meg knows her to be. There is sure to be loads of secrets, strife & a bit of Southern Charm on Bonny Island.

Kitty Cult

In reading other book reviews on Goodreads, a few folks didn’t enjoy the Kitty cult storyline & felt the set-up was too long. I had no problem with it. In fact, I loved learning about the Kitty cult! I figure the Emily Carpenter has to set up a good amount of background when we are dealing with several characters, a famous author, rabid fans, two locations & the mystery of Bonny Island.

The Weight of Lies is honestly 3 stories in one. Readers unravel the story of Meg & her mom, the history and residents of Bonny Island & we get a full taste of the fandom known as the Kitty Cult. How Emily Carpenter is able to weave this all into an entertaining and thrilling read is beyond me. But, she does it so well & I really enjoyed it!

THE VERDICT

I am Really Into This book! The Weight of Lies is a darker family mystery layered with secrets buried in the Deep South.
