Big Little Lies
Big Little Lies
I just finished my first Liane Moriarty book and I was Really Into it. Sarah sent me a copy for Christmas and I finally dug in – and finished it in 3 days! I could not put it down and it was just in time for the premiere of HBO mini series starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley.
Sarah: Ahhhh! I knew you would be Really Into It. I read it way back in 2014 & love it. I honestly love anything by Liane, but I am in dire need of a refresher from you before the premier.
This is one of those books you stay up late reading to figure out the mystery, but you never really want it to be over! This is a tale of three very different mothers in a wealthy school navigating their children’s kindergarten year. We know there is a drunken parent’s night that ends up in murder, and the book goes through the events to get us there. There is helicopter parenting, abuse, single moms and tons of judgement. All the parents are worried that their children are being bullied at school when they are bullying each other, acting worse than their kids.
I thought that the characters were well written, complex and believable. Although the book was dark it was very funny at times – just enough wit to lighten it up while still unraveling the dark mystery. I cannot believe it was my first book by Liane! I will certainly be picking up more in the future, but until then I have the new miniseries to keep me warm!
The 7 episodes were written for HBO by David E Kelley of Ally McBeal fame. The original setting of a fictional Australian beach town was changed to Monterey, California, but Nicole Kidman should help bring that flavor. I am interested in seeing if the tone of the book translates to the screen and if it is able to keep the humor.

Sarah: It’s here! I’ve had this date on my calendar for months! I’m a total fangirl when it comes to Liane Moriarty. I was lucky enough to get to meet her this summer in Savannah at a She Reads event & she is a TOTAL joy. Down to Earth, REAL, funny & kind- I am enamored. I remember her telling us she declined to be the screenwriter for the series & to paraphrase, “I wrote the book, they can take it from here.” I can’t wait for tonight!
We will be chatting about each episode after it airs. Come join us!
