Parent’s Guide to Understanding Five Nights at Freddy’s

What in the world is Five Nights at Freddy’s? My kids are really into Five Nights at Freddy’s & many people don’t get it- especially parents. So, I enlisted the help of my kids to make a Parent’s Guide to Understanding Five Nights at Freddy’s.

History of Five Nights at Freddy’s

Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) is a jump scare game created in 2014 by Scott Cawthon. The first series features a cast of animatronics who terrorize an overnight security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. The player attempts to track the animatronics through security cameras & the goal is to survive the night without these haunted, creepy characters making it to the guard room. Players switch cameras & turn the lights on & off to keep track of the animatronics, but players lose “power” every time they check on the creepy characters. If you make it to the end of the night without one of them sneaking up on you, then you move on to the second night.

My kids are Really Into This game & they’re not alone.

This game is huge! So many kids know these characters & I often find myself in Hot Topic, Target & Gamestop searching for all things FNAF with my kids. They are Really Into This stuff. There are POP! Funko characters, these Lego type toys that you can piece together the different animatronics, key chains, T-shirts, watches, backpacks, Cosplay, etc. When we were visiting the Amazon Books at the mall, we even found some Five Nights at Freddy’s books.

More About the Parent’s Guide to Understanding Five Nights at Freddy’s

I’ve learned quite a bit, but it’s hard to keep track of all the different characters & different versions of the game. My daughter, Channa, put together this video to help us understand. She’s a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things FNAF.

Five Nights at Freddy’s & YouTube

People get Really Into the game, but there is also a huge YouTube culture associated with FNAF. There are hundreds of videos circulating with the FNAF cast in the starring roles. Often, the videos include commercial & original music. Some are kid-friendly & others are more geared towards adults.

One of our favorites is Skillet’s ‘Monster’ featuring Springtrap.

Parent’s Guide to Understanding Five Nights at Freddy’s – Album

There’s even an album of FNAF songs. We’ve listened to this album too many times to count. My kids are Really Into YouTube as well. We do have to be careful because there is definitely stuff out there that’s for adults ONLY & some Really creepy stuff too. They get so Into these characters they like seeing what other people made. Another favorite FNAF song, ‘Emperors New Clothes’ by Panic! At the Disco has been on heavy rotation lately.

Parents Get Schooled

I knew the day would come when my kids would be schooling me on what the younger crowd is Really Into and that day has arrived. Freddy & the gang seem like they are here to stay. And you know what, I’m Really Into This as well because it’s what my kids are Into. Channa’s little brother has some difficulties with speech, but he can sing the entire FNAF album & can talk about all the different characters for hours & that’s Really cool to me. What are your kids Into & what were you Really

What are your kids Into & what were you Really Into as a kid that your parents didn’t understand?
