I cannot quit talking about this show. Derek is Really Into Empire & I thought this show would just be a rip-off of Luscious & Cookie’s crew. I was WRONG!
Star hooked me from the first fifteen minutes of the pilot. We meet Star, (Jude Demorest) & she is begging to get out of her abusive foster care home. Her plan is to be on her own, find her sister, Simone (Brittany O’Grady) & head to Atlanta to make her music dreams come true.
She has an Instagram friend, Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) who is the daughter of a music icon & they plan to meet-up in the ATL & get their music career started. Why Atlanta? Well, ATL is a huge music town, but Star & Simone are trying to find their godmother, Carlotta (Queen Latifah) & hope she will help them.
Kind of a SPOILER here, but this happens within the first 15 minutes of the pilot. When Star tracks down her sister, she finds Simone’s foster dad Otis (Darius McCrary from Family Matters) is raping her. Star goes into mama bear mode & stabs Otis in the back, grabs Simone, steals his car & heads straight to Atlanta. This scene lets the viewers know that Star will do WHATEVER it takes to keep her & Simone safe & will push through any barrier to get what she wants.
The soundtrack is AMAZING. Everyone is perfectly cast. I LOVE that Miss Lawrence, introduced to me from Real Housewives of Atlanta, is a main character on Star. Y’all, Miss Lawrence was Sheree’s hair stylist, went on to be part of Bravo’s Fashion Queens with Bevy Smith & Derek J. The dance moves are sick! There’s drama, heart, family, love, secrets, friendship, confidence & I’m Really Into it. Star also brings in real issues; rape, crime, racial injustice, religion, LGBTQ characters, drugs & domestic violence. Tyrese Gibson is even on here, as a pastor that’s trying to seduce Queen Latifah!
I can’t imagine you could watch this show & not be Really Into it. I’m all caught up after binge watching the first 11 episodes & I can’t wait for more. I’m stoked that it’s already renewed for a second season & I’m about to re-watch all the episodes with Derek because I know he will be Really Into it too. Give it a shot. If you like music at all, if you love R&B, soul, tough ass women, drama, tension & heart in your television, you will love Star.
