Butterflake Herb Loaf Bakealong with King Arthur Flour

It is time for our monthly King Arthur Bake Along recipe!  Sarah is Really Into King Arthur Flour and their blog, and after showing it to me, I am too!  I am in desperate need of improving my baking skills, so I tried the Blog Bakealong.  I knew it would be hard to follow up Sarah’s gorgeous Dark Chocolate Eclairs, so I was glad that this recipe was different.   This month the recipe is for a Butterflake Herb Loaf.  One of the things that I liked about this recipe is they gave you several different ways to bake the bread.  I chose two: the Classic Loaf and the Monkey…

Guinness Chocolate Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

I love a great chocolate cake & one of my favorites is a Guinness Chocolate Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Now, I’m not a beer drinker, but the Guinness really adds something to the cake that gives it a really rich flavor.  Jessica and I have been making alcoholic cakes all year… I first tried a cake like this at one of my favorite bakeries, Sugar Mama’s in Austin, Texas. Over 9 years ago, I went on a hunt for a similar recipe & I came across this one by Dave Lieberman & it’s been a staple in my kitchen ever since. I actually made these cupcakes for my daughter’s…

    Lucky Charms Chocolate Cake

I’ve had a lifelong love affair with Lucky Charms cereal. Seriously, even to this day my Grandmother always has a fresh box for me when I visit. One of my favorite things in the world is a bowl filled with freshly opened Lucky Charms, really cold whole milk & a large spoon. I don’t mess around with the small ones. One summer when I was about 8 years old, Lucky Charms packed this tiny cake mix, frosting and pan into the box. You mixed it with water and microwaved it for about a minute & then iced it with the creamy chocolate frosting. The cake was chewy because it was…

    Mardi Gras King Cake

Mardi Gras King Cake LAISSEZ LES BON TEMPS ROULER! It’s that time of year, Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday or Carnival;  it’s time to party! Sarah: We are both from the south, but I can claim I was born in Louisiana. That’s why I know all about Natchitoches Meat Pies. I’ve eaten many a King Cake in my day & this year I’m making my own! Jessica:  I am not from Louisiana, so Sarah has me there, but my family is from Southeast Texas.  My dad’s parents are from Galveston, which has it’s own Mardi Gras celebration.  My Grandpa and Aunt ride the float every year with the Krewe of Aquarius!…

Dark Chocolate Eclairs Bakealong with King Arthur Flour

I’m Really trying to up my baking game this year, so when I saw these dark chocolate eclairs I knew I had to give them a go. This recipe is part of the King Arthur Flour Bakealong Challenge & once you master the dough, the flavor combinations are endless. Watching the Great American Baking Show, I saw the bakers complete a challenge making a pâte à choux dough for their desserts & seeing their step by step process gave me the confidence to try it at home. Well, my first batch did not turn out the way I planned. I couldn’t find my digital thermometer, so I think I put the…

    The Best Red Velvet Cake

My whole family is Really Into this Red Velvet Cake from Jocelyn Delk Adams, the creator of Grandbaby Cakes. I consider myself a Red Velvet Cake connoisseur & this recipe is my favorite of all time. I planned to have this up for y’all before Valentine’s Day, but I was too busy eating it to finish the post in time. I’ve made tons of Red Velvet cakes over the years & this one is moist, (Sorry, Jessica) tasty, light & great for a layer or sheet cake as well as cupcakes. It’s also super easy to whip up. Now, the Blackberry Cream Cheese Icing is so tasty. The whipped icing is lighter and…

    Cosmopolitan Cake

We have been cooking through the King Arthur Flour blog Cocktail cakes and now that we have made the last one, I am a little sad that we are finished!  Sarah made the White Russian Cake, The Dark & Stormy Cake and her favorite, the Banana Daiquiri Cake.  They all looked so beautiful.  I just don’t have the baking talent that she does!  Her cakes are aspirational and mine are reality.  I made the Manhattan Cake first, followed by the Cosmo Cake.  They were both delicious but they were not nearly as pretty.  That was no fault of King Arthur Flour, just my limited baking skills!!  Without further ado, the Cosmopolitan…

    Banana Daiquiri Cake

Y’all know by now that I am Really Into layer cakes. Jessica & I decided to make all the King Arthur Flour Cockatil Cakes & so far we’ve made the White Russian Cake, Manhattan Cake & Dark & Stormy Cake. I took on this Banana Daiquiri Cake thinking I wouldn’t be Into It, but guys, it was SO GOOD. I know Jessica hates the word “moist” but that is the best word to describe this layer cake. Often butter cakes can be a bit dense, but this one was fluffy, light & I would eat the cake even without icing, which is unheard of for me.  The lime gives it a nice added flavor,…

    Dark & Stormy Cocktail Cake

Recipe featured in King Arthur Flour’s holiday issue of Sift magazine. If I was competing on The Great American Baking Show, this 3 layer Dark & Stormy Cake  would be my Technical recipe. It’s not something I could have ever thought up on my own, (I had to ask my friend how to make a Dark & Stormy cocktail). I know Nia & Ian would love this boozy cake with the strong ginger flavor & creamy icing.   The cake batter was fairly simply to make. Luckily, I didn’t have any cakes sliding out of pans, like I did with my White Russian Cake . The only bummer is that my top layer was kind of…

    Manhattan Cocktail Cake

How many Manhattans can you drink while you make a Manhattan Cocktail Cake?  The answer is quite a few if you are Jessica Bierman.  Don’t worry, I was baking not driving!  I am Really Into any recipe that gives me the excuse to have some cocktails while I’m making it. The next in the series from the King Arthur Flour blog – The Manhattan Cake.  Sarah and I may have fought a little trying to decide which cakes from this post we got to bake because they all looked so good (fine, fine Sarah you can have the Dark and Stormy – especially since your White Russian cake turned out…
