Fall TV 2017: New Shows
The Deuce
Who? James Franco in a dual role, Maggie Gyllenhaal
What? The Deuce is the story of the legitimization of the porn industry in the 1970’s New York.
When? Premiered September 10th and airs Sundays at 9pm
Where? HBO
Why? I will give any HBO show a chance, and right now they are looking for a new flagship series with Game of Thrones winding down. I love historical fiction and gritty drama, so this series looks right up my alley. The Deuce was created by George Pelecanos & David Simon, the same two who created one of my all-time favorite shows, The Wire. And James Franco playing two characters – I’ve gotta see that.
Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Who? Edie Falco, Anthony Edwards, Julianne Nichols, Gus Halper
What? Dramatization/True Crime story of the notorious Menendez brother murders.
When? Premieres September 26

Why? Arguably the second most famous murder trial of the 90’s, the murder trial of the Menendez brothers has been buzzing for a while. I am ready to relive this salacious trial and I will watch anything with Edie Falco.
Ghosted
Who? Adam Scott & Craig Robinson
What? A skeptic and a believer work together to explain the paranormal in Los Angeles.
Where? FOX
When? Premieres October 1st, airs Sundays at 8:30
Why? Two stars from two great comedies come together in a Ghostbusters-like plot? Sign me up. I am looking for a great new sitcom, and this one sounds fun and creative.

What? “An overworked television producer and single mother in the middle of a fractious separation; young daughter goes missing in the middle of the night, Jane’s world – and her controversial police series – implodes.”
Where? ABC
When? Premieres October 1st, Sundays at 9
Why? What a great cast! It was created by Tassie Cameron and many aspects of the show are based on her life as a single mother who runs a cop show. I think this show has great potential to be the new can’t miss thriller and I feel like it may end up appointment TV for me.
The Mayor
What? “A struggling hip-hop artist runs for mayor to promote his mixtape and wins the election.
When? Premieres October 3rd
Where? ABC
Why? We’ve seen what happens when a non-politician runs for office, but this seems like a more light-hearted take on the idea. It will be cool to see what The Mayor does when he gets into office.
The Halcyon
Who? Hermione Corfield, Jamie Blackley, Olivia Williams
What? “The story of a bustling and glamorous five star hotel at the center of London society and a world at war.”
When? Premieres October 2nd

Why? WE love us some historical fiction. Nothing has or maybe ever will satisfy me insatiable need for Downton Abbey. But, the story of a bustling and glamorous five-star hotel at the center of London society and a world at war has a good shot.
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World
Who? Jason Ritter, Joanna Garcia-Swisher
What? A down and out guy, Kevin, gets tapped by God to save the World.
When? Premieres October 3rd
Where? ABC
Why? I’m a little on the fence about Kevin, but Entertainment Weekly is Into it, so I’m going to give it a try. Jason Ritter is a Really talented actor & I think he can pull off the “superhero without tights” type of character.
Liar
Who? Joanne Froggatt, Ioan Gruffudd
What? “A teacher and a surgeon are rocked by scandalous accusations after they enjoy a seemingly innocent date.”
When? Premieres September 27th
Where? Sundance
Why? Because we love thrillers, that’s why! There are two sides to every story & we’re down for whatever Joanne Froggatt does. This is a short series (6 part) so it’s not a huge time commitment and it sounds thrilling & intriguing.
At Home with Amy Sedaris
Who? Amy Sedaris
What? A show as original as Amy. Sedaris will be playing a variety of characters while showing us crafting, cooking and entertainment projects.
When? Premieres October 24th
Where? TruTV
Why? I heart Amy Sedaris. She is quirky, fun, smart and creative. I cannot wait for this show!
Rosehaven

What? A popular Australian show moving to the United States. A man moves back to his small town in Tasmania to run his family business.
When? Premieres September 27th (2 episodes)
Where? Sundance
Why? This show looks hilarious. Navigating a small town is not the most original idea for a TV show, but that’s because there are endless possibilities. This show is already a hit in Australia & we are excited to see what it’s all about.

This Is Us
Who? Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Milo Ventimiglia, Justin Hartley & Mandy Moore
What? Everyone has a family. And every family has a story. This Is Us chronicles the Pearson family across the decades.
When? September 26th at 9/8c
Where? NBC
Why? Sterling K. Brown is enough for me to watch any TV show. It’s no wonder he earned an Emmy for his performance on this show. I was Really Into Parenthood & this show filled that void. It’s emotional, sweet, sad, beautiful & so well written. I’m excited to have moreadventurese with The Pearsons.
Black-ish
Who? Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne
What? The Johnson family lives in an affluent suburb of Los Angeles and tries to navigate their world while still maintaining their roots.

Why? This show gets a lot of awards love and with good reason. It just keeps getting better with age. Each Johnson kid has their own unique personality, Dre’s live in parents are hilarious, and he and Rainbow raise a beautiful family. Black-ish brilliantly covers tough issues while maintaining great humor. We see this show being on for several more years.
Will & Grace
Who? Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes

When? Premieres September 28th at 9/8c
Where? NBC
Why? This show is inventive, dirty & progressive. You can get all caught up with older seasons on Hulu. I’m most looking forward to the quick & witty comebacks between the cast. Also, can’t wait to see Karen’s fashions for 2017.
The Mindy Project
Who? Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, Ed Weeks, Xosha Roquemore
What? Dr. Mindy Lahiri tries to have it all in New York City.
When? Tuesdays
Where? Hulu
Why? Heading into its final season, Mindy Lahiri is far from the person she was at the start of the show. She has grown up and the cast has changed (many times), but the show has remained fun and funny. We love Mindy’s dedication to feature actors from all walks of life and to show that women really can do it all. Mindy Kaling has said that Lahiri won’t necessarily end up with the rom-com happy ending everyone expects, and we are ready for a not so typical ending for a not so typical character.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Who? Rachel Bloom, Vincent Rodriguez III, Donna Lynne Champlin, Gabrielle Ruiz, Pete Gardner
What? Rebecca Bunch moved to West Covina, CA to follow Josh…but she isn’t crazy!
When? Premieres October 13th
Where? CW
Why? Rebecca continues to be crazy and we can’t get enough! I’m ready for more songs, more dances, more comedy and more crazy from this unique show. Last season left us with the promise of revenge, so we have a new brand of crazy to look forward to.
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Who? Larry David, Jeff Garlin
What? Larry David and his day to day. Not much more you can say to describe this stalwart.
When? Premieres October 1st, airs Sundays at 10PM
Where? HBO
Why? There are so many reasons to be excited about the return of Larry and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Between Seinfeld and Curb, I really can’t remember a time where Larry David wasn’t entertaining me. We are so excited to see what is going to annoy him this time around and hope that it continues to be the comedy classic that it is.
Great News
Who? Andrea Martin, John Michael Higgins, Horatio Sanz, Briga Heelan & Nicole Richie
What? Getting along with office colleagues can be rough, but working with your mom? That’s a whole different story, and it’s the headline for Katie, a smart, ambitious news producer at “The Breakdown,” a national cable news show that shoots in Secaucus, NJ.
When? September 28th

Why? Fresh off my binge session of Difficult People, I am needing more Andrea Martin in my life. This show is smart, fun & I just love a good sitcom.

Who? Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher, Atticus Shaffer
What? The Heck family we know & love is entering the show’s 9th & final season.
When? October 3rd at 8/7c
Where? ABC
Why? I’m already bawling. The Middle is a wonderful family-centered sitcom. Sue Heck is one of the most lovable characters on TV – ever. The Hecks are relatable, regular & I’m going to miss them so much. I can’t wait to see what happens with Sue & Sean.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Who? Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Andre Braugher, Chelsea Peretti, Terry Cres, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz
What? Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the antics of the 99th precinct with an ensemble cast.
When? Premieres September 26th

You’re The Worst
Who? Aya Cash, Chris Geere, Kether Donohue, Desmin Borges
What? The unromantic romantic comedy, You’re The Worst follows the relationship of Gretchen and Jimmy and their sidekicks in LA.
When? Wednesdays at 10
Where? FXX
Why? I was blown away when I first saw this show and binged it this summer. While being somewhat deplorable and hilarious, there are deeper themes explored. You will find yourself surprised that you are rooting for these characters.
THE VERDICT
